Shop Manager & Drawer:
Amy graduated from Kendall College of Art & Design (a basic requirement to work at GRCR) where she learned how to draw faces, leaves, rocks and other lame stuff. Amy worked for GRCR back in the day (2010 – 2011) as a coffee roaster, farmer’s market salesperson, and Jane of all trades. A year later, she moved to Toledo to help her fiance get through pharmacy school, working for public libraries along the way. After a few years, she returned to Grand Rapids a married woman and bought a house for her dog Squishy…and husband, and an ever changing number of cats. Once settled in, she couldn’t resist the “draw” to come back to GRCR and roast coffee, drink coffee, talk about coffee, and just live coffee. She spends her days off tending to her millions of pets, reading comics, drawing things, writing about things, and eating things.
Favorite Coffee: Zimbabwe Crake Valley
Coffee Roaster & Sunbeam Personified:
Nicole comes to us from a small farming village up north called Prescott – a Google search finds Prescott…really, in Ogemaw County, within Mills Township, population 262! Apparently, the entire village is less than a square mile in area and located on just two streets; Garfield & Jay – surprisingly, not Main Street! Nicole fondly remembers her favorite summer activity as skinny dipping in Johnson Creek…what else does a kid do in Prescott? She graduated high school and turned her attention to the big city of Grand Rapids and Kendall College of Art & Design where she obtained a BFA in Photography. Her dream in life is to run her own studio in the woods with the walls made of wine bottles (10,000+ collected so far) where she serves customers fresh roasted coffee [Grand Rapids Coffee Roasters coffee she point out…suck up] tea and healthy snacks. A proud mother of two, Nicole enjoys working with her hands, drinking wine (obviously), writing, photography, making mosaics, spending time in nature and always being positive!
Favorite Coffee: Papua New Guinea Sigri Estate
Saturday Specialist & Sauerkraut Lover:
Stephanie started loving coffee at the age of 16 while in Germany visiting relatives for coffee & cake. She currently is working for Blodgett Hospital and frequents daily her past job at the Second Serving Coffee Shop to keep tabs on new employees and the coffee ordering cycle. On select Saturdays, you will find Cabbage (her shop nickname – has to do with her German heritage and love of sauerkraut) brewing & roasting coffee all the while with a big smile on her face! She hopes to one day start her own Germen themed coffee & dessert shop specializing in Lebkuchen, Gugelhuph, Donauwelle, Prinzregententorte, Bethmännchen, Germknödel & Zwetschgenkuchen!
Favorite Coffee: Brazil Sweet Yellow Bourbon
Saturday Specialist & Lifesaver:
We would like to welcome Becky JL Hofer to the Coffee Crew! Yes, she has two middle names…Becky is originally from Alpena, home of the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary (oh, my!). When asked, she stated that she has never been to the Marine Sanctuary (oh, no!). She graduated with a BA in Psychology (two middle names perhaps?) and then went on to complete EMT training. While she is still working as an EMT, she has yet again returned to one of her greatest passions – COFFEE! She loves tattoos/art, music (she plays the drums), gardening/cooking, veg food/local beer and also works part-time at The Gremlin Gallery tattoo shop (can you say workaholic?). In addition, she enjoys hanging out with her hubby (also a musician) & furbabies (we think that means dogs) & traveling the world. BTW, we heard a rumor that “Sticks” is expecting a little cowbell…get it?
Favorite Coffee: Jamaican Blue Mountain Clydesdale Estate
Saturday Specialist & Outdoor Enthusiast:
Holly hails from a culture of BBQ, butter and sweet tea; yes, she’s a southern girl. While growing up, she took part in many intense outdoor activities like scaling the hidden Reedy Branch Falls, diving Cumberland Caverns, air-boating the Kissimmee Swamp, rafting the Chattahoochee River and mastering the aerial rope course at the Hugh Kaul Beanstack Forest in Red Mountain Park. Next up, she received her B.S. in Criminal Justice from Lake Superior State while on a tennis & golf scholarship. She then entered & exited the Ann Arbor Police force, discovered coffee in Key West two days after a Jimmy Buffet concert, met a charming man from Zeeland named Adam (which is why she is in Michigan…why else would anyone come here from Key West?) and attended The Saturday Experience to see if coffee could, no would, speak to her. It did. Holly “1Adam12” brings her southern charm and infectious energy to the Coffee Crew on select Saturdays and we welcome her with outstretched arms…mostly out of fear of being handcuffed and/or tased…or lectured as to why it’s important to the community that police officers write speeding tickets…
Favorite Coffee: Bolivian Caranavi
Saturday Specialist & Ruler Collector:
Erin worked for Grand Rapids Coffee Roasters for over three years, quickly ascending the ranks to Shop Manager before deciding a change of pace was in order. She landed a job at Spectrum Health Hospital (like most everyone else in GR) and is now focused on that baby making train (presumably, with her husband “Hops”) you know; them eggs ain’t gettin’ any younger…Oh wait, we hear Erin is having a baby…yes, yes, it’s true, she is having a baby…or an alien, we can’t be sure. Relegated to a part-time role (we think she just wants to keep us on the “straight & narrow”) she helps us out when she can during The Saturday Experience. Erin has an eclectic collection of rulers…some of which she’s had since grade school…many with her name embossed on them…well, what does one think of that?
Once a Ruler, Always a Ruler!
Favorite Coffee: Ethiopian Natural Sidamo
Saturday Specialist & Gamer:
Chris hails from Portage, Michigan and comes to us as a “Living Geek”…ta dah! As a youth, he shunned away from athletics, cheerleaders, cars, pool parties, meat; and instead focused on mastery of the oboe, board games, marbles, bowling…you get the picture. Later, he upped the geek quotient by turning to Harry Potter, playing Magic: The Gathering and collecting nice wool socks with his girlfriend. Chris attended GVSU for a psychology degree and walked away early with the firm knowledge that he did not want to work in that field. He instead focused in on playing Magic more competitively, even travelling to distant places across the US to compete. While the big money has escaped him by playing these tournaments, he hopes to one day cash in big. In the mean time, he is expanding his knowledge and vocabulary in the world of coffee. This interest has sparked a passion to brew the ultimate cup which in turn, has him experimenting with flavor & aroma profiles and different coffee brewing techniques. We encourage you to challenge Chris, aka Ollivander, to help you pick out the best coffee for your drinking pleasure. He hopes to bring his love for designer board games and coffee together in a new cafe in Toronto called Snakes n’ Lattes, opening date TBD. Welcome Chris, were all geeks on some level.

Saturday Specialist & Smartypants:
We would like to welcome Betsy to the amazing Coffee Crew! Betsy was born & grew up in Grand Rapids and was home-schooled by one of her parents, grandparents, aunt or uncle, or next door neighbor; depending on who was at the house at the time. She is now attending Grand Valley State University and is on the path to obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in CHEMISTRY. Boy: that neighbor must have been really smart…She says her hobbies include: reading a book on a rainy day, spending time with friends & family, drinking coffee (insert smiley face) and learning about the coffee roasting process (o.k., now she’s just sucking up). She enjoys vacationing in the U.P. and would be content to stay in Michigan her whole life. But, if she were to choose a place to move to, it would be Colorado Springs, Colorado…we think it’s because they have legalized marijuana – she says, “it’s because of the recreational activities available and scenic beauty”. Also, if she were to travel outside the U.S., she would visit Amsterdam…for the amazing “coffee shops” and great breweries (oh wait; she said Germany) because of her German ancestry of course…and their great breweries!
In the future, she envisions herself wearing a lab coat and safety goggles…maybe to be an optical assembler, physical vapor deposition technician, production mixer, dental lab technician, specimen technician, blood component processor, wastewater treatment operator, phlebotomist, or possibly a chemist.
Favorite Coffee: El Salvador Santa Maria
Saturday Specialist & Hostess with the Mostess:
Originating from California, Christina decided to leave the sunny, wacky, excessively expensive and overrated Bay Area to embrace The Mitten. She graduated from Calvin College with a bachelors in Psychology and is currently working towards a Master’s in Counseling. She works full-time at Spectrum Health where she is known as the sweetest, bubbliest assistant always making her co-workers laugh & smile. When not a work, studying, or hanging out with her 7 housemates, she likes to steal cats from surrounding neighborhoods and sell them to crazy cat ladies on the internet. Why we frown on this enterprise, Christina is quick to point out that she then gives the “cat money” to local charities to help the less fortunate. Her roommates point out that she has been self-diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder but she is still diagnosing herself over and over to make sure. They also point out that she is the shortest & loudest of the roommates and is adding endless quarters to the communal “sass jar”. Christina’s dream is to open a holistic & integrated care counseling center deep in the woods of the Appalachian or Adirondack Mountains…do we dare say, called Purrfect Care? She also dreams of traveling all over the world to sample delightful breads, coffee & ice cream, washing her hands again & again and then returning home to spend time with “her” cat, Lily.
Favorite Coffee: Zambia Mubuyu Estate
Saturday Specialist & Flip-Flop Footwear Spokesman:
Spencer was born with a silver spoon in his mouth on the flat plains of Kansas where the fields of corn…never end. His family home, like most others in Kansas, is right in the path of Tornado Alley. So naturally, chasing storms was a favorite pastime. “Spence” fondly recalls a time where his Dad pulled over the family car under an overpass during a ferocious storm all the while calmly serving him and his brother & sister hot chocolate with mini marshmallows and crumpets.
He wears flip-flops year ‘round…yes, he is the most interesting man in the world! He also runs marathons, which begs the question: Does he wear flip-flops when running? He also enjoys a host of other outdoor activities like rock climbing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, biking, hiking, etc…all while wearing flip-flops. On the more sensitive side, Spencer writes spoken word poetry and short stories. In addition, he says that he is a meat minimalist and that is why we call him “Meat”. While currently a bachelor, we do find it odd that he has dated three different girls named Dorothy…umm, you can take the boy out of Kansas, but you can’t take Kansas out of the boy. Welcome to the Coffee Crew!

Delivery Mapper & Vertical Lift Operator:
Dad is our delivery coordinator. He maps out the most efficient route, minimizing left turns and all, thusly delivering our fresh roasted coffee as quickly as possible. This saves us time & money, which is one reason why our coffee prices are so affordable. During special events, he turns into the comedic elevator operator entertaining customers in the freight elevator saying, “Craig said this job would take me to the top.”
